Eggers ('78) won four letters in both cross country and track. He was a two-time NCAA Division III national cross country qualifier. As a freshman, Eggers ran on Wesleyan's most successful cross country team. He placed 73rd to help the Plainsman finish ninth at the 1974 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships. As a senior he won the NIAC Cross Country Championship and led the Plainsmen to the conference team title. He earned All-American honors with a sixth-place finish at the Division III meet as the Plainsman finished 19th in 1977. During the 1978 outdoor track season Eggers set the school mark in the mile at 4 minutes, 12.3 seconds, which ranks third on the school's all-time list. That year he also finished 10th at the Division III national championships in the 1,500-meter run. After college Eggers continued his running. In 1983 he finished 20th at the United States Cross Country Trails and was 38th in the marathon at the 1984 U.S. Olympic Trials.
