The 1989 Nebraska Wesleyan University football team is still regarded as the best football team in school history.

Under head coach Jim Svoboda, the 1989 Plainsmen finished with a school record 10 wins, a NIAC Championship and the only postseason victory in NWU football history.
Nebraska Wesleyan won 10 straight games for the longest winning streak in school history.  NWU posted a perfect 5-0 mark in Nebraska Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play to claim the NIAC Championship.

The Plainsmen reached the NAIA Division II Playoffs where they traveled to Chadron State to take on the Eagles.  NWU and Chadron State would play a memorable game as the Plainsmen would come out on top with a dramatic 46-43 victory in double overtime for the only playoff win for Nebraska Wesleyan football.

NWU moved up to No. 7 in the rankings and advanced to the NAIA Quarterfinals where they fell to Wisconsin-La Crosse.

At the end of the year, the Plainsmen had set school records for total offense, rushing offense, field goals and most interceptions.
