Box Score 2 O'Fallon, Mo. – The Nebraska Wesleyan baseball team got their 2020 season off to a good start winning game one of the doubleheader over Greenville University 3-1 on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 22). Game two ended in a 3-3 tie after 11 innings because of darkness.
In the opening game, the Prairie Wolves were able to take advantage of four Greenville errors to score three unearned runs.
NWU had just two hits in the opening tilt, but they took advantage of their scoring opportunities.
In the top of the 6
th inning trailing 1-0,
Aaron Nichols tied the game scoring on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, the biggest play of the game occurred.
Wyatt Stute struck out swinging on a pitch in the dirt and the catcher threw the ball past the first baseman allowing
Will Schneidewind and
Derek Kolbush to score.
That would be all the Prairie Wolves pitching staff would need as they shut down the Panthers.
Daniel Hundley got the start going 4.0 innings allowing two hits and one run with four strikeouts.
Hayden Parker was the winning pitcher, giving up three hits and no runs in his four innings of work. Closer
Josh Seifert came in to record the final three outs of the 9
th inning to get the save.
In game two, the Prairie Wolves bats were much more productive getting 10 hits in the contest.
NWU jumped out to a 2-0 lead scoring one run in each of the first two innings.
Riley Ward scored on a RBI groundout from
Kaleb Knox in the top of the 1
st, then Nichols drove in
John Haimowitz with a single in the 2
nd inning.
Greenville tied the game at 2-2 scoring two runs in the 4
th inning. The Prairie Wolves executed a double steal on a strikeout to score the final run of the game with Ward crossing home plate. The Panthers got an unearned run in the bottom of the 7
th inning for the final run of the game.
Neither team was able to score the final four innings resulting in a tie game because the field did not have lights.
Noah Unger made his debut on the mound for NWU going 5 2/3 innings allowing two earned runs on six hits.
Jackson Cummins pitched 3 1/3 innings of shutout baseball in relief with four strikeouts, then
Drew Poulas pitched the final inning.
Brady Harrison allowed an unearned run in 2/3 of an inning but
Aiden Bennett closed out the inning.
Three NWU players had two hits in the game with
Derek Kolbush,
Riley Ward and Mason Bennet all collecting a pair of hits. Kolbush had the only extra base hit with a double.
NWU is scheduled to play Fontbonne University on Sunday.
