Box Score 2 INDIANOLA, Iowa – The Nebraska Wesleyan baseball team ended their eight game losing streak in a big way as the Prairie Wolves knocked off Simpson College 13-6 in game one of an Iowa Conference doubleheader on Thursday (April 5) at McBride Field in Indianola, Iowa.
Game two was a thriller with Simpson getting a walk off RBI single in the bottom of the 12
th inning to give the Storm a 4-3 victory over NWU. That ended a seven-game losing streak for Simpson as they picked up their second IIAC win.
In the NWU victory to start the day, the Prairie Wolves jumped ahead 7-2 early then added five more runs in the top of the 9
th to secure their first conference victory of the season. The Prairie Wolves scored a run in each of the first three innings, including four in the top of the 3
rd to make the score 7-2. Simpson cut the lead to 7-5 after four innings then each team scored a run in the 5
th inning making it 8-6.
Neither team scored the next three innings sending the game to the 9
th with a score of 8-6. A three-run triple by
Brook Johnson was the big hit in the 9
th to clear the bases and give the Prairie Wolves plenty of insurance. Johnson would score on a wild pitch and
Tyler Winterstein scored on a passed ball to account for the other two runs.
NWU started the game with two runs in the 1
st inning as Winterstein got an infield RBI single and
Matt Orozco drove in the first run with a ground out. Simpson responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the 1
st.
Justus Stocks hit an infield single in the 2
nd to get the lead back to the Prairie Wolves. In the 3
rd inning,
Joel Maxwell picked up a 2-run single, then a throwing error on a fielder's choice allowed another run to score.
Spencer Scheer walked with the bases loaded driving in Maxwell.
Nebraska Wesleyan finished the opening game with 13 total hits, but did commit five errors in the field.
Justus Stocks and
Tyler Winterstein both had three hits to pace the Prairie Wolves offense. Nine different players recorded a hit for NWU.
Hayden Parker got the victory on the mound pitching the first five innings allowing four earned runs.
Connor Cech pitched the final four innings not allowing an earned run with five strikeouts.
The nightcap was a marathon that lasted well over four hours and finally ended after 11 pm late into the night.
Both teams had several opportunities, but neither could take advantage to earn the win. Finally in the 12
th inning Truman Schmitt singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. He was then driven in by Nathan Carlin who hit a line drive to right field allowing Schmitt to beat the throw home.
Just like game one, NWU took the early 1-0 lead in the top of the 1
st inning. Stocks led off the game with a single then scored on a hit by
Derek Kolbush. Simpson tied the game in the bottom of the 3
rd inning.
In the 6
th inning Winterstein doubled to lead off the inning then he scored on a pinch hit single from the Storm a 3-2 lead.
Trailing 3-2 heading into the top of the 9
th, the Prairie Wolves had one last chance to tie it up.
Kyle Hunter walked to lead off the inning. He went to second on a wild pitch then a bunt single from
Spencer Scheer put runners on 1
st and 3
rd with one out. Kolbush hit a fielder's choice to deep short that allowed Hunter to score and tie the game.
Simpson appeared to be prime to earn the victory in the bottom of the 10
th inning. The Storm lead off batter reached on an error then went to second base on a failed pickoff attempt. Two straight intentional walks loaded the bases with no outs.
Tucker McHugh recorded a strikeout then got two straight fielders choice outs to send the game to the 11
th.
The two teams combined for 24 total hits in the game with NWU getting 10. Scheer, Kolbush, Winterstein and
Cole Schumacher each had two hits to lead the Prairie Wolves.
NWU used four pitchers as starter
Riley Ward went 4 2/3 allowing just one earned run.
Brody Murphy pitched 2 1/3 innings giving up two hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts.
Nick Bruno recorded two outs before leaving the game with an apparent arm injury to allow McHugh to close out the game. He pitched 3 2/3 innings striking out two and allowing four hits.
The two teams will try to complete the three game series on Saturday afternoon at 1 pm in Indianola.
