Orlando, Fla. -- The Nebraska Wesleyan baseball team defeated Keene State on Sunday afternoon (March 13) to close out their spring break trip on a six-game winning streak.
NWU went 6-2 on their trip to Florida and now got their record back to .500 at 8-8 overall. The Prairie Wolves split with SUNY Poly on March 9 then swept doubleheaders against Iowa Wesleyan on March 10 and King's College on March 11.
The Prairie Wolves built up a 12-4 lead through five innings against Keene State as they plated seven runs in the bottom of the 5th inning.Â
Brett Mattson hit a 2-run home run, then
Justus Stocks,
James McKain,
Aaron Ochsner and
Pete Sitorius all hit RBI singles in the inning.
It looked like NWU would breeze the rest of the way but the Owls kept chipping away at the lead. Keene State scored one run in the 6th and three in the 7th to cut the lead to 12-8. They added one more run in the 9th inning but NWU relief pitcher
Pete Sitorius struck out the final batter of the game to give the Prairie Wolves the win.
Aaron Ochsner and
Pete Sitorius both got three hits with two RBI to lead the Prairie Wolves offense.Â
Joe Babic,
Tyler Winterstein and
Chase Powers each had two hits. Babic and Mattson had home runs.
Brody Murphy got the victory on the mound pitching 5 2/3 innings and allowing three earned runs. Three other NWU pitchers came in for relief.
Nebraska Wesleyan returns home to face Jamestown in a pair of doubleheaders on March 18-19 at NWU Field.
