Prairie Wolves Baseball Adds Mitch Lawson as Assistant Coach

7/25/2025 11:37:00 AM

LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska Wesleyan Head Baseball Coach Jeff Christy announced the addition of Mitch Lawson to the Prairie Wolves coaching staff on Friday morning. Lawson will serve as Assistant Baseball Coach heading into the 2026 season.

"I am incredibly excited for Mitch to join our baseball program as an assistant coach.," Christy said. "His passion for recruiting and dedication to developing student-athletes will be instrumental as we continue to build our program's future. Our players can't wait to get on campus and start working with him."

Lawson comes to NWU after serving as Assistant Coach and Instructor at Southwest Minnesota State University, where he helped the Mustangs to a 2024 NSIC Tournament appearance and their first conference tournament win in a decade. He oversaw hitter development and offensive strategy while also leading scouting and game planning efforts. Three SMSU players signed professional contracts under his watch.

Prior to his time at SMSU, Lawson spent two seasons at Upper Iowa University. There, he led development efforts for hitters, outfielders, and baserunners while incorporating performance technology like Blast Motion and Rapsodo into daily training. He also coordinated travel, led fundraising initiatives, and helped manage academic progress.

Lawson began his coaching career at Pleasant Valley High School in Bettendorf, Iowa, where he spent six seasons and helped guide the Spartans to the 2021 Iowa Class 4A State Championship and four state tournament appearances. PVHS also captured three straight Mississippi Athletic Conference titles during his time there. In 2023, he was named the IHSBCA District Assistant Coach of the Year.

"I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to join Coach Christy and the Prairie Wolves staff," Lawson said. "I'm excited to get to work with our student-athletes and contribute to the continued growth of the program."

Lawson is already on campus and will be a key piece of NWU's player development efforts as the Prairie Wolves prepare for the 2026 campaign.
