Decorah, IA - A slow start halted Nebraska Wesleyan's road effort in Saturday's 73-54 loss to Luther.
HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Quarter: Luther raced out to a 24-5 lead in the first quarter.
Anastyn Pettlon and
Alison Davis were the lone bright spots for the Black and Gold as Pettlon chipped in three points, while Davis had two points and four rebounds.
2nd Quarter: Luther continued to roll early in the second quarter as a pair of threes grew the Norse lead to 25. After a pair of
Peyton Tritz free throws, Luther knocked down another three to take its largest lead of the game. NWU responded with a lay up from
Maddie Demke and five points from
Anastyn Pettlon to make the score 33-19. Luther would score six of the next eight points but
Maddie Demke and
Brynn Sebek closed the half out with four straight points.
3rd Quarter: Trailing 39-20, Nebraska Wesleyan went to work in the early stages of the second half, as
Peyton Tritz,
Anastyn Pettlon, and
Carney Black powered NWU on an 8-4 run to cut the Norse lead to 15. The Norse responded with back to back threes that bookended an
Alison Davis lay up. Luther would grow their lead to 23 before
Brynn Sebek knocked down two free throws. Another Luther three put the Norse up by 24 but back to back lay ups from Pellton and Tritz made the score 56-36. Luther would regain a 22 point advantage with a pair of free throws to close the quarter.
4th Quarter: Despite the large deficit, Nebraska Wesleyan continued to fight.
Carney Black,
Peyton Tritz, and
Anastyn Pettlon each recorded lay ups in the opening minutes of the quarter as NWU went on an 8-4 run to make the game 63-44. The two teams would trade baskets on their next few possessions before Luther opened up a six point run to go up 73-48. Nebraska Wesleyan would close the game on a 6-0 run, which made the score 73-54.
