Swimming Competes at Two Meets in Two Days

LINCOLN, Neb. (November 2nd, 2024) - The Nebraska Wesleyan swim teams competed at a double dual with Midland and Minnesota Morris on Friday, before hosting Minnesota Morris in a dual on Saturday. The women's team went 3-0 over the two day stretch, while the men went 2-1. 

WOMEN'S SWIM
HOW IT HAPPENED

The Prairie Wolf women earned a pair of resounding victories on Friday afternoon, defeating Midland University 118-78, and the University of Minnesota-Morris 144-66. Nebraska Wesleyan earned first places finishes in six events at the double dual. The relay team of Elena Lazzaretto, Ava Hunt, Sydney Leslie, and Beatrice Massa Micon earned first in the 400 yard medley relay after finishing in a time of 4:04.79. In the 50 yard freestyle, Lydi O'Neil swam to victory, touching the wall in 24.90. Sydney Leslie earned her second gold of the day after finishing first in the 100 yard butterfly in a time of 58.88. Lilly Brennan's time of 1:01.63 earned her first place in the 100 yard backstroke. Aubrey Horner swam to victory in the 100 yard breaststroke in a time of 1:09.02. Nebraska Wesleyan's 400 yard freestyle relay team consisting of Beatrice Massa Micon, Lydi O'Neil, Lizzie Meyer, and Elena Lazzaretto secured first after finishing in 3:42.57. 

On Saturday, the women picked up right where they left off, earning a dominant 140-58 victory over Minnesota Morris, which saw the team rack up 11 first place finishes. The relay team consisting of Lilly Brennan, Ava Hunt, Sydney Leslie, and Beatrice Massa Micon earned first in the 200 yard medley relay after finishing in a time of 1:54.52. Massa Micon also earned first in the 50 yard freestyle and 100 yard freestyle, while Leslie swam to gold in the 200 yard butterfly. The relay team of Lizzie Meyer, Claire Crilly, Lydi O'Neil, and Elena Lazzaretto earned gold in the 200 yard freestyle relay, touching the wall in 1:43.34. Lazzaretto also earned gold in the 200 yard individual medley, and the 200 yard backstroke. Lili Spady secured first in the 500 yard freestyle after finishing in a time of 5:54.62, while Aubrey Horner's time of 2:35.61 earned her first in the 200 yard breaststroke. 

MEN'S SWIM
HOW IT HAPPENED

Nebraska Wesleyan fell to Midland 145-65, but defeated Minnesota Morris 149-55 on Friday afternoon. The Prairie Wolves earned gold in three events. Zachary Cantorna earned gold in the 1650 yard freestyle, swimming to victory in a time of 16:48.10. Cantorna also earned gold in the 500 yard freestyle after finishing in a time of 4:48.31. Carter Heaton's time of 1:49.33 earned him first in the 200 yard freestyle. 

On Saturday, the men picked up a resounding 133-58 victory over Minnesota Morris. The Prairie Wolves earned first in 10 events. Zachary Cantorna's time of 9:55.96 earned him first in the 1000 yard freestyle, Gabe Patton earned gold in the 200 yard butterfly. NWU's 200 yard medley relay team consisting of Cooper Leibhart, Mattia Rosatelli, Alec Zurn, and Kai Trotman swam to victory in a time of 1:40.41. Trotman also earned gold in the 50 yard freestyle, while Rosatelli picked up gold in the 200 yard individual medley and the 200 yard breastroke. Leibhart picked up his second gold of the day in the the 200 yard backstroke. The 200 yard freestyle relay consisting of Carter Heaton, Burke Lauseng, Brodie Hoesing, and Dylan Fucik swam to victory after touching the wall in 1:31.48. Fucik also earned first place in the 100 and 200 yard freestyle. 

SCHOOL RECORD COUNT
Three Prairie Wolves set school records on Friday evening. Sydney Leslie's time of 58.88 reset the school record in the women's 100 yard butterfly. Despite a second place finish in the women's 400 yard individual medley, Elena Lazzaretto swam to a new school record of 4:56.45. Zachary Cantorna's time of 16:48.10 earned set a new school record in the men;s 1650 yard freestyle. On Saturday, Cantorna set another school record, winning the 1,000 yard freestyle in a time of 9:55.96.

UP NEXT
 Nebraska Wesleyan will travel to Chicago, Illinois, for a three day meet. The meet will begin on Friday, November 22nd, and end on Sunday, November 24th.
