HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1 vs. Fontbonne University

  • The Nebraska Wesleyan baseball team fought for the lead throughout the entire game. The game was determined in the ninth inning, where both teams made game-changing runs. Ultimately, the Prairie Wolves weren't able to come out on top, losing 2-3 to start their run in St. Louis. 
  • Both teams were in a stalemate during the first three innings due to a defensive showcase.
  • Alejandro Espinoza achieved six of his ten strikeouts in the first three innings.
  • The first run of the game went to Fontbonne in the fourth inning. Nebraska Wesleyan responded later in the seventh inning with an RBI double from Jason English.
  • Both teams' offenses ignited in the ninth inning with a total of three runs being scored. The Prairie Wolves took the lead at the top of the inning after a triple from Noah Unger. However, Fontbonne responded by scoring two runs of their own to secure the victory.

Game 2 vs. Illinois Wesleyan University

  • The Prairie Wolves started strong in Game 2, racking up ten runs in the first four innings.
  • With a balk in the first leading to a run, the Prairie Wolves started their scoring run and never looked back. An RBI in the second extended their lead to 2-0.
  • In the fourth inning, the black and gold proved why their offense could be one of the best in the country. Highlighted by singles from Jason English and Hunter Zielasko, NWU broke things open for good by adding eight more runs to their total.
  • The Nebraska Wesleyan bats continued to impress in the later innings. Evan Kling doubled in the eighth allowing Zach Oskbar to score. Christian Harris also reached home on a passed ball. 
  • Tyler Romero pitched seven innings for Nebraska Wesleyan on 65 pitches and five strikeouts. Pitching one inning each, Dominic Sis and Bobby Simmons closed out the victory.
  • The Nebraska Wesleyan pitching staff stayed calm and collected throughout the entire game to help secure the win. 
  • The Prairie Wolves defeated the Titans 12-6 and will look to complete the sweep against Illinois Wesleyan tomorrow.

  • "We were lead by our arms again. Espinoza and Romero were able to command the zone, and throw all their pitches for strikes."
