Box Score 2 WAVERLY, Iowa – Nebraska Wesleyan got a solo home run in the top of the 9
th inning to send the game to extra innings, then took an early lead in the 10
th but Wartburg College answered with a home run and got the game winning single to earn a 5-4 win in game one of a IIAC baseball doubleheader on Saturday in Waverly, Iowa. The Knights completed the sweep of the day with a 9-2 win in game two during the afternoon.
Trailing 3-2 heading into the 9
th inning,
Matt Orozco led off the inning with a HR over the left field wall to tie the game at 3-3. That sent the game to extra innings where NWU got the offense going once again.
Spencer Scheer led off the frame with a single, then moved to second when
Aaron Ochsner was hit by a pitch.
Justus Stocks hit into a fielder's choice to get Ochsner out at second, but the shortstop threw the ball away attempting the double play allowing Scheer to come in to score and put the Prairie Wolves up 4-3.
Wartburg responded with a solo HR of their own to begin the 10
th inning. That was followed up by a single, and sacrifice to put the winning run at second base.
Micah Hoage came in to relief
Nick Bruno and walked the next two batters to load the bases. The Knights then got the game winning hit to left field to earn the win.
Brody Murphy had another solid outing for the Prairie Wolves as the starting pitcher. He went eight innings allowing two earned runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts and four walks.
The Prairie Wolves outhit the Knights 11-10, but Wartburg used three home runs and two doubles while NWU had only two extra base hits.
Owen Gubbels was 3-4 to lead the Prairie Wolves offense, while Orozco was 2-4 with an RBI.
Brook Johnson and Ochsner also drove in runs.
NWU got on the board first in game two as
Brook Johnson led off the game with a triple then scored on a ground out by Ochsner. That lead would not last as Wartburg plated six runs in the bottom of the 1
st recording seven hits in the inning off NWU starter
Jesse Maguire.
The only other run for the Prairie Wolves came in the 4
th inning when
Kyle Hunter singled,
Nick Bruno doubled and
Salvador Anguiano drove in Hunter with a ground out.
NWU will try to snap their current losing streak in the final game of the series on Monday. The Prairie Wolves have dropped four straight and eight of the last nine to fall to 11-19 overall and 4-10 in the IIAC.
