ORANGE CITY, Iowa -- Northwestern College scored the game-winning runs on an error in the bottom of the 9th inning to complete a comeback victory and sweep past Nebraska Wesleyan 6-5 in game two of a GPAC baseball doubleheader. The Red Raiders rolled past the Prairie Wolves 15-5 in the opening game.
For the Prairie Wolves, they finished the weekend going 0-4 in doubleheaders at Dordt and Northwestern. NWU falls to 11-17 overall and 2-6 in GPAC play.
NWU looked poised to have a solid Saturday as
Brook Johnson led off game one with a solo home run. That lead didn't last very long as Northwestern exploded for six runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. The Red Raiders then added another run in the 2nd, one in the 4th and four in the 5th as they scored 12 unanswered runs.
Northwestern finished with 17 total hits in the first game. NWU had seven hits as they did manage to score three runs in the 7th.Â
Sam Ayars went 2-4 with a double and triple, and Johnson was 2-3 with two RBI.Â
Brody Murphy was roughed up for six earned runs and six hits in just one inning of work to take the loss.
The Prairie Wolves also jumped ahead 1-0 in the second game. Ayars and
Pete Sitorius singled then
Matt Orozco drove in Ayars with a ground out. Just like game one, Northwestern responded in their half of the inning. The Red Raiders scored one run in the 1st then two more in the 2nd to take a 3-1 lead.
In the 4th inning, the Prairie Wolves tied the game as
Tyler Winterstein hit a 2-run HR to right field to make the score 3-3. NWU went ahead in the 5th inning as Orozco hit a solo HR and
Ryan Boswell scored on an error to make the score 5-3.
Northwestern closed the gap to 5-4 with a run in the bottom of the 5th inning. That score would hold up until the bottom of the 9th inning.Â
Pete Sitorius came in to pitch in the 9th inning as NWU led by one run. He walked the first two batters to start the inning. The Red Raiders moved the runners with a sacrifice bunt. An intentional walk loaded the bases with one out. Sitorius got a strikeout needing just one out to complete the save. Northwestern hit a ground ball to third base, and the throw to first base was off target allowing two runs to score and the Red Raiders to win.
NWU outhit Northwestern 15-9, but four errors hurt the Prairie Wolves. Nebraska Wesleyan also left 16 runners on base as they struggled to hit with runners in scoring position.
Sam Ayars led the way going 3-5 with a stolen base. Orozco and Winterstein went 2-5 with a home run and two RBI, and
James McKain was 2-4 with a double. Starting pitcher
Caleb Thiessen pitched 6 2/3 innings allowing three earned runs on nine hits.
