LINCOLN, Neb. – Morningside College scored five unanswered runs in the final two innings of game one as they defeated Nebraska Wesleyan 5-2 in GPAC baseball on Saturday afternoon at NWU Field in Lincoln. The Prairie Wolves also dropped the second game of the doubleheader, 13-2.

NWU starting pitcher
Caleb Thiessen had a no-hitter heading into the 6
th inning as the Prairie Wolves led 2-0. The Mustangs opened with two hits including an RBI double by David Foley to cut the lead to 2-1. The game was then tied as Jared Lemoreaux lined a hit off the foot of Thiessen and the ball bounced through the hole on the left side to allow the tying run to score.

The Prairie Wolves had a chance to re-gain the lead in the bottom of the 6
th inning.Â
James McKain singled to right field, then back-to-back walks loaded the bases for
Matt Orozco. Orozco, who hit a 2-run home run in the bottom of the first, would face the Morningside closer Lance Spongberg with one out. Orozco hit a hard grounder to second base and the Mustangs turned the double play to end the threat.

Morningside went ahead in the top of the 7
th as they took advantage of two walks and two hits, including a big 2-run double by pinch hitter Blake Meacham.

NWU jumped ahead 2-0 in the 1
st inning as McKain singled on the first pitch. Orozco sent a deep drive over the left field fence to go ahead 2-0. NWU would not have another base runner until the 6
th inning as starting pitcher Cody Selig was in control. Selig struck out nine and allowed just three hits in 5 1/3 innings. Spongberg then closed the game pitching the final 1 2/3 innings striking out three.

The Prairie Wolves finished with five total hits, as McKain had two, Orozco homered and
Tyler Winterstein and
Chase Powers singled in the 7
th.Â
Caleb Thiessen pitched six strong innings allowing three hits and two runs with six strikeouts and no walks on 64 pitches.Â
Jordyn Johnson pitched the 7
th inning and took the loss allowing three runs.

Morningside pounded out 12 hits in the second game as they won 13-2 in a game that was ended after seven innings due to the run rule. The Mustangs jumped ahead 3-0 in the third inning as Blake Rogers hit a big 2-run home run.

NWU responded with two runs in the bottom of the 3
rd inning as
Sam Ayars had an RBI double and Orozco got an RBI single. Those would be the only two runs that NWU could muster the rest of the way.

Orozco led the NWU offense with two of the seven hits, as he reached base three times. Pete Sitourius was 2-4 and Ayars was also 2-4 with a double.
