LINCOLN, Neb, -- Nebraska Wesleyan made a late rally in game one that came up short but the Prairie Wolves held on for a win in the second game of the GPAC home opener on Saturday afternoon (Apr. 2) at NWU field in Lincoln.
Briar Cliff won the first game 13-7 in eight innings, then the Prairie Wolves were winners in game two 4-3.
The Chargers got ahead 6-0 in the first game and looked to be in control of the doubleheader. BCU scored five runs in the first inning and another in the second to lead 6-0.Â
Finally in the fifth inning NWU got on the board with a run. They exploded for four runs in the sixth inning.Â
Justus Stocks hit an RBI triple for the big hit of the inning to pull the Prairie Wolves within one run.
Trailing by one run in the bottom of the seventh, the Prairie Wolves mounted a rally.
Joe Babic led off the inning with a double. He would score the tying run on a single by
Tyler Winterstein to send the game to extra innings.
Briar Cliff scored seven innings in the top of the eight inning to earn the win.
In the second game, the Prairie Wolves fell behind 2-0 after four innings. Finally in the fifth inning the NWU bats got on track.
The first four batters reached base for Nebraska Wesleyan as they used two hits, an error and a walk to get on track.Â
Matt Orozco had the big hit of the inning with a big drive down the right field line to drive in two runs.
NWU held a two run lead heading into the sixth inning. Briar Cliff cut the lead in half with one run, but that was the only run they would score the rest of the way as the Prairie Wolves held on for the win.
Nebraska Wesleyan will continue their home stand on Sunday as they host Dakota Wesleyan in a doubleheader at 1pm.
