Box Score 2 Northwestern College posted a two-out rally to score two runs in the 8th inning then won the game in the bottom of the 9th as the Red Raiders defeated Nebraska Wesleyan 6-5 in extra innings in game one of a GPAC baseball doubleheader on Saturday. The Red Raiders also won the second game by just one run with a 3-2 victory.
The Prairie Wolves had chances to win both games as they went toe-to-toe with Northwestern, a team that is receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25.
NWU got a two-run double by
Chase Powers in the top of the 8th inning as he sent a high chopping ground ball over third base down the left field line to break open a 3-3 game and giving the Prairie Wolves a 5-3 lead in the first extra inning. NWU still had runners on second and third with no outs in the 8th, but could not score any more runs as they missed on a squeeze attempt and struck out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the 8th,
James McKain retired the first two Northwestern batters and was one out from ending the game. He then hit the next batter and allowed three straight singles as Davis Bloemendaal tied the game with a single to center field.
After retiring NWU in order in the top of the 9th, Northwestern got three singles to start the inning with Nikko Melonas driving in the the walk off single to win the game.
Powers was the top offensive player for the Prairie Wolves going 3-4 with a HR, double and four RBI. He hit the first Prairie Wolves HR of the season with a drive over left field fence in the second inning.
Sam Busboom had a solid start on the mound for NWU going 5 2/3 innings allowing no earned runs on five hits.
Nebraska Wesleyan outhit the Red Raiders 7-5 in the second game, but Northwestern took advantage of some key Prairie Wolves mistakes to earn the 3-2 win.
Northwestern jumped ahead 1-0 in the first as the opening batter was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a sac fly by Skyler Wheeler. NWU tied the game in the 2nd inning as
Jordan Watteyne drove in
Chris Johnson with an RBI single to right field.

Colby Richards did not allow a Red Raider hit until the 4th inning. In the 4th, Cody Groskreutz singled and would eventually score on a failed pickoff attempt at first base. The Red Raiders got their final run in the 5th inning as Erik Widener hit a home run over the left field wall.
Nebraska Wesleyan pulled within one run in the 6th inning as
Chase Powers tripled and scored on a sac fly by
Chris Johnson. They got the leadoff batter on to start the 7th but he was stranded their as the game ended.
Richards got the loss on the mound allowing two earned runs and four hits in 5 1/3 inning with just 73 pitches.
