Box Score 2 Nebraska Wesleyan defeated Concordia University 9-3 in game one of a GPAC baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon (Apr. 26) in Seward, Neb. The Prairie Wolves then dropped the second game, 11-7.
With the split, the season came to an end for the Nebraska Wesleyan baseball team as they finish in a tie for 9th in the GPAC standings and do not qualify for the postseason tournament. NWU ends the year with a 7-28 overall record and a 6-14 league record.
NWU opened game one by scoring four runs in the first inning and they never trailed again. The first four batters reached base safely to start the game with
Colby McPike,
Chase Powers and
Connor Bool all recording RBI singles.
Concordia answered with two runs in the bottom of the 1st inning to cut the lead in half. NWU then broke the game open with five more runs in the top of the 3rd inning.
Nick Dolson hit a twp-run single,
John Estudillo hit an RBI single and
Colby McPike walked with the bases loaded to record another RBI.
That is all that
Sam Busboom would need on the mound as the senior threw a complete game for the Prairie Wolves. Busboom allowed just one earned run and five hits with six strikeouts in his final game on the mound.
John Estudillo and
Nick Dolson each had three hits and score two runs to lead the NWU offense. Dolson drove in two runs and Estudillo had one RBI.
Connor Bool was 2-4 with an RBI and
Colby McPike had two RBI.
Game two was not the way the Prairie Wolves wanted the season to end as they committed eight errors in the game and fell behind 11-3. Concordia scored runs in five different innings including a big four run 2nd inning to go ahead 5-1.
NWU did pull back within two runs in the 3rd inning as they added two runs.
Pete Sitorius doubled and scored on an error with
Chris Johnson at bat.
James McKain led off the inning by reaching on an error and his courtesy runner
Will Reimer would eventually score on a ground out by
Chase Powers.
Nebraska Wesleyan did put up a fight in their final inning as they scored four runs in the top of the 9th and had two runners on base with the tying run on deck when the final out was made. Powers had a two-run double and
Sam Ayars had an RBI single for the big hits of the inning.
Justin Van Dyke took the loss on the mound going 6 2/3 innings allowing seven runs, two earned on seven hits.
Chase Powers was 3-5 with three RBI to lead the NWU offense.
Saturday was the final game for Head Coach Bill Fagler who is retiring at the end of the season. Assistant coach
Scott Ballinger will take over the Prairie Wolves program.
