Box Score 2 In a hard fought and intense doubleheader on Thursday night in Fremont, the Nebraska Wesleyan University baseball team fell twice to Midland University in scores of 8-4 and 4-2.
Midland, who is receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25, improves their record to 37-14, 16-2 GPAC and sets up a doubleheader with Doane on Saturday to decide the GPAC title. NWU falls to 6-27 overall, 5-13 in GPAC play and now will put their postseason hopes on the line on Saturday at Concordia University.
The NWU bats came out firing to start the game as the Prairie Wolves held an early 2-0 lead against the top Midland pitchers. In the 1st inning with two outs,
James McKain walked then singles by
Colby McPike and
Justin Van Dyke loaded the bases.
Pete Sitorius singled to drive in a run to put NWU up 1-0.
In the 2nd inning,
Chris Johnson doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third on a hit by
Sam Ayars. Johnson then scored on a sacrifice fly by
John Estudillo.
Midland scored one run in the 2nd then tied the game with a run in the bottom of the 3rd. The Warriors then put together a big inning of five runs in the 4th inning to break open a 7-2 lead.
NWU did add two runs in the top of the 5th on an RBI single from Van Dyke and a sac fly by Sitorius, but that was as close as they could get.
Jon Keck got the loss in his first start of the year going 3+ innings allowing five earned runs on five hits with four walks.
Van Dyke, Sitorius and Johnson all had two hit games for the Prairie Wolves at the plate as they had 10 hits as a team.
Game two was a much closer tilt the entire way. Midland went up 1-0 in the 1st as they scored on a sacrifice fly. In the 2nd inning, the Prairie Wolves would come back to tie the game.
Colby McPike singled, went to third on a fielding error and scored on a single by
Chase Powers.
Neither team would score again until the 4th inning as Midland plated two runs to go ahead 3-1. NWU struck for one run in the 6th inning as Van Dyke doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single up the middle by
Connor Bool.
Midland added an insurance run in the top of the 8th, and NWU could not mount a rally in the 9th inning as they dropped both games.
Jordyn Johnson took the loss for NWU going 6.0 innings allowing just three hits. Johnson struck out five but was hurt by six walks. Five different players had one hit for the Prairie Wolves.
