13th Ranked Tigers Spoil Senior Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

13th-ranked Doane College scored eight runs in one inning in game one to earn a 9-1 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan in game one of a GPAC baseball doubleheader then held off a late Prairie Wolves rally for a 12-8 win in game two at NWU Field in Lincoln.  The Tigers two victories spoiled the Senior Day celebration for Nebraska Wesleyan.

Doane proved why they are ranked 13th in the NAIA Top 25 and unbeaten in the GPAC as they showcased a top pitching staff and solid hitting.

In the opening game, the two teams were locked in a pitching dual through three innings as the game was tied 0-0.  In the top of the 4th, the Tigers exploded for eight runs on five hits.  The big hit was a grand slam by Liam Bedford, as well as a 3-run double by John Derr.

Doane's only other run came in the 6th inning as Nick Studer hit an RBI double.  NWU got their lone run of the game in the 6th inning as the Tigers committed three straight errors to open the inning.  Nick Dolson scored the only run on a double play ground out.

NWU was limited to four hits in the game.  John Estudillo hit a double with Chris Johnson, Sam Ayars and Connor Bool all adding singles.  Justin Van Dyke took the loss allowing six earned runs in 3 1/3 innings.  Nathan Roth threw a complete game to earn the win for Doane.

In the second game, Doane exploded for six runs in the top of the 2nd inning for another big inning.  NWU got on the board in the 2nd as Colby McPike tripled to lead off the inning then scored on a single by Pete Sitorius

Doane put up three more runs in the 4th inning to go ahead 9-1.  In the bottom half of the inning, NWU scored two runs of their own.  Chase Powers got an RBI single to center field and would eventually score on a wild pitch.

The Tigers looked to put the game out of reach with two runs in the 6th and two more in the 8th to go ahead 12-3.  NWU showed great resolve and started their rally in the bottom of the 8th as they scored five runs.    The first three batters all reached on hits as McPike singled, Sitorius doubled and Powers singled to drive in a run.  Chris Johnson then walked to load the bases with no outs.  A strikeout left the bases loaded for pinch hitter Justin Van Dyke.  Van Dyke hit a single that landed between outfielders to allow two runs to score, but Johnson was thrown out overunning 2nd base.  NWU was not done yet as Nolan Lott singled to drive in Van Dyke.  Pinch hitter John Estudillo then doubled down the left field line to bring in Lott, but that was the end of the threat.

NWU got the leadoff batter on base to open the 9th, but a double play ended the game.

The Prairie Wolves had 14 hits in the second game led by McPike who had a big day at the plate.  He was 4-5 with a triple.  Sitorius was 2-4 with an RBI, while Powers was 2-5 with two RBI.  Colby Richards took the loss for NWU going just 1 2/3 innings giving up six earned runs.
