Box Score 2 In a battle of teams fighting for position to stay in the top eight of the GPAC baseball standings, the Hastings College Broncos came to Lincoln and defeated Nebraska Wesleyan twice on Friday afternoon (April 18). Hastings won game one, 10-6, then shutout the Prairie Wolves 6-0 in the second game.
NWU had one of their better offensive performances of the year in the first game, but struggled on the mound and on defense. Hastings scored three unearned runs in the first inning and never trailed again.
The Prairie Wolves bounced back with two runs in the bottom of the 1st as
James McKain hit an RBI double and
Justin Van Dyke had an RBI single. Hastings put up four runs on six hits in the 3rd inning to go back ahead 7-2. NWU tried to claw back in the game with three runs in the bottom of the 3rd. Van Dyke doubled to left field for an RBI, then
Chris Johnson hit a bloop double down the right field line to drive in two more runs.
Each team scored a run in the 5th inning, then the Broncos scored two more insurance runs in the 6th and 7th innings to earn the win.
AJ Fruchti threw a complete game for the Broncos with 140 pitches, striking out eight NWU batters.
Sam Busboom took the loss for NWU allowing four earned runs and nine hits in 3.0 innings.
NWU finished with 10 hits on the day.
Justin Van Dyke had his best offensive day of the year, going 4-4 with two doubles and two RBI.
Nolan Lott and
James McKain both had two hits.
Game two was a pitching dual between Christian Schneider of Hastings and
Jordyn Johnson from NWU. Schneider ended the day with a complete game 6-hit shutout recording nine strikeouts on the day. Johnson went 7 2/3 innings allowing six hits and four earned runs with six strikeouts in a losing effort.
Hastings scored a run in the 3rd, two in the 5th then added three in the 8th. All three runs in the 8th inning were scored with two outs as NWU retired the first two batters of the inning.
NWU never could get their offense going, as they did not record a hit past the infield from the 2nd inning on.
