NWU Earns Extra Innings Win on the Road

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 After allowing the tying run in the bottom of the 7th inning, Nebraska Wesleyan scored three runs in the top of the 9th inning as the Prairie Wolves earned a 7-4 extra innings win over Mount Marty College in game one of a GPAC baseball doubleheader on Monday.  The Lancers came back to earn a split with a 5-3 win in the second game.

NWU loaded the bases in the top of the 9th as Jordan Watteyne walked and Nolan Lott and Derek Kay each getting a single with one out.  The next batter, Colby McPike hit a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Watteyne with the go-ahead run.  The Prairie Wolves weren't done there as they added two more runs.  Chase Powers walked to score Lott, then McKain was hit by a pitch to bring in Kay and put NWU up by three runs.

James McKain allowed one hit in the bottom of the 9th, but Colby McPike threw out a base stealer at third base for the final out of the game.

The game was tied 2-2 heading into the 6th inning before the Prairie Wolves broke the tie.  McPike singled and advanced two bases on an error by the outfielder.  Pinch runner Sam Ayars then scored on a passed ball to put NWU up by a run.  McKain would drive in another run with a ground out giving NWU a two-run cushion.

Mount Marty scored one run in the bottom of the 6th, and then posed a big threat in the 7th.  With two outs and two runners on base, NWU elected to intentionally walk the next batter to load the bases.  The next batter walked to bring in the tying run.  With the go-ahead run at third base, pitcher Justin Van Dyke got the Lancers to fly out to center field where Andrew Toy made a diving catch to send the game to extra innings.

NWU finished with 10 hits in the game, with nine different players recording a hit.  Chris Johnson was 2-5 with an RBI to lead the Prairie Wolves offense.  Justin Van Dyke went seven innings on the mound, allowing six hits and three earned runs.  He struck out four, but was hurt by six walks.  James McKain pitched the final two innings to get the win and improve to 3-1.

In game two, things looked great for the Prairie Wolves early as John Estudillo led off with a double and scored on a single by McKain the very next batter.  The Lancers scored a run of their own in the 1st to tie the game back at 1-1.

NWU plated another run in the 2nd inning as Estudillo drove in Connor Bool on a sacrifice fly.  In the bottom of the 2nd, the Lancers took advantage of three Prairie Wolves errors to score three runs and go up 4-2.  They went ahead 5-2 in the 4th inning.

Colby McPike hit an RBI single in the 6th for the Prairie Wolves to make the score 5-3, but NWU left the bases loaded to end the inning and never threatened again.

NWU is now 6-20 overall, but 5-7 in GPAC play to sit in 6th place in the league standings.
