Briar Cliff Bats Lift Chargers to Sweep Over Wolves

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Briar Cliff used a strong wind blowing out to left field to pound out 12 extra base hits in a GPAC baseball doubleheader as the Chargers swept past Nebraska Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon (Mar. 30).  BCU won game one, 16-1, then took the second game 6-1.

Jake Erichsen led the way for Briar Cliff as he hit three home runs on the day while adding a double and seven RBI.

The Prairie Wolves (2-16, 1-3 GPAC) struggled offensively with eight hits in the first game and nine in the second game, but could not get the key hit.  NWU left 12 runners stranded in game one and nine more in the second game.  NWU scored their only runs of the game in the final inning of each game.

In the opener, BCU scored six runs in the third inning and exploded for eight more in the top of the fifth.  They finished with 16 hits in the first game with Matt Fiechtner and Jake Erichsen combing for six of those hits with 11 RBI.

Justin Van Dyke took the loss for NWU on the mound allowing eight earned runs and nine hits in four innings of work.  Pete Sitorius and Colby McPike each had two hits to lead the NWU offense.

The Prairie Wolves got a strong pitching performance by Matt Schommer in the second game, but could not muster up enough offense.  Schommer went 7 2/3 innings allowing four earned runs and nine hits.

Briar Cliff scored two runs in the top of the 2nd inning, then did not score another run until the top of the 7th inning.  BCU scored one run in the 7th, another in the 8th and plated two in the 9th for insurance runs.

NWU threatened in the bottom of the 9th as they loaded the bases with no outs, but could only score once.  Chase Powers hit an RBI single to plate the Prairie Wolves only run.
