Box Score 2 It took a dramatic finish in the 9th inning, but Nebraska Wesleyan finally snapped their 13-game losing streak with a 4-3 win over Dakota Wesleyan in game two of the GPAC opening doubleheader on Saturday afternoon (March 29). DWU won the first game of the doubleheader 9-3.
Nebraska Wesleyan entered the bottom of the 9th tied 3-3 with the Tigers.
Joe Babic came in as a pinch hitter and sent a deep drive to left center field for a triple. It was the first hit of the year for Babic who stood at third base with one out. DWU chose to intentionally walk
Colby McPike and
Pete Sitorius to load the bases.
Chris Johnson hit a ground ball to the pitcher who retired Babic at home plate. On the attempt to complete the double play, the DWU catcher's throw to first went off Johnson's helmet and into right field to allow pinch runner Will Reimers to score the game winning run.
It wasn't just the bottom of the inning that had dramatics. In the top of the inning, Ben Spitznagel drove the ball to left field that got past the outfielder. Spitznagel attempted to score on an inside the park home run but was thrown out at the plate.
NWU got a very strong pitching performance from
Jordyn Johnson who went 7 2/3 innings allowing two earned runs on seven hits with six strikeouts. Johnson threw 132 pitches on the day.
James McKain pitched the final 1 1/3 innings to pick up his second win of the year.
The Prairie Wolves had eight total hits at the plate with
John Estudillo and
Colby McPike each going 2-4. McPike had a very impressive day at the plate and behind the dish at catcher. He threw out three runners attempting to steal and picked off another runner at second base.
In the opening game, Dakota Wesleyan scored four runs in the top of the 3rd to break open a tie game. Cody Silveria had the big blow with a two-run HR over the left field fence. The Tigers extended the lead with three runs in the seventh inning.
NWU was limited to just four hits, with two of the hits coming as infield singles. The Prairie Wolves also struggled with four errors.
Sam Busboom took the loss allowing four earned runs and five hits in five innings.
