Carleton Edges NWU in Extra Innings

Hayden Tsutsui drove in the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th inning as Carleton College defeated Nebraska Wesleyan 3-2 in baseball action Friday afternoon (Mar. 28) at NWU Field in Lincoln.

NWU got one runner on base in the bottom of the 10th inning but they were unable to advance him.  The Prairie Wolves had their chances to take the lead in both the 8th and 9th innings as well.  In the 8th, Derek Kay led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice by Chris Johnson.  The runner was stranded at second base.  In the 9th, John Estudillo was hit by a pitch with one out, but did not advance.

NWU took a 2-1 lead in the 5th inning as Chase Powers hit a sacrifice fly to drive in J.J. Thaut.  The first NWU run came in the 4th inning as Jordan Watteyne laid down a perfect bunt for a hit to score Johnson from third.

Carleton tied the game in the 6th inning as they took advantage of two NWU errors.  The first run came in the 1st inning.

Colby Richards had an impressive start on the mound for NWU going 6.0 innings allowing five hits and one earned run.  Ryan Hughes took the loss pitching the final inning of the game.

NWU will open GPAC play on Saturday with a home doubleheader against Dakota Wesleyan.
