Prairie Wolves Post Big Weekend at Three Meets

LINCOLN, Neb. — Reed Emsick ran the third-fastest 800 meters in Nebraska Wesleyan program history Friday night at the Concordia Twilight, and the Prairie Wolves capped a three-meet weekend Saturday with a men's 4x400-meter relay that ranks among the fastest in school history.

Emsick, a junior from Omaha, clocked 1:49.66 at the Concordia University campus in Seward to finish second in a stacked field that included NAIA Automatic Qualifying mark holders. The time places him fifth nationally in Division III this season and third all-time at NWU.

McKenna Smith had a record of her own. The freshman from Wahoo ran 2:19.47 in the 800 at the Concordia Twilight to break the Nebraska Wesleyan freshman record in the event. She also competed at the Loper Twilight in Kearney on Sunday, finishing second in the 400 in 1:00.80.

The men's 4x400 relay posted the best time in that unit's season Sunday at the Loper Twilight, running 3:12.79 to place third. The quartet of McClain Meyer, Connor Halde, Barrett Mayfield and Emsick split 47.61, 48.53, 48.20 and 48.12, respectively. The time ranks 10th in program history and 16th fastest nationally among Division III programs this season.

Halde, who ran the relay's second leg in 48.53, also placed third in the 400 hurdles Sunday at 53.84.

At the Nebraska Spring Tune-Up on Friday in Lincoln, Arynn Spence turned in another strong showing in the javelin, placing third with a throw of 40.48 meters (132 feet, 10 inches).

At the Concordia Twilight, Jacob Young won the 110 hurdles final at 14.28, edging Nebraska-Kearney's Luke Brachle by five hundredths of a second. Young had also advanced out of prelims with a 14.25. Connor Halde ran 53.44 in the 400 hurdles final for second place. The women's 4x100 relay of Jadah Laughlin, Raegan Levi, Chloe Mooberry and Rachel Smith ran 47.45. Mooberry placed third in the long jump at 5.59 meters (18-4 1/4).

In the throws at Concordia, Gavin Kelch placed third in the men's discus seeded section at 48.65 meters (159-7), and Jonathan Lee was third in the men's hammer unseeded section at 51.77 meters (169-10). Drake Ferris led the unseeded discus with a throw of 44.93 meters (147-5) for first place. On the women's side, Anna Lundahl and Aspin Collins both competed in the discus, with Collins throwing 39.09 meters (128-3) at Concordia and 40.76 meters (133-9) at the Loper Twilight.

The regular season concludes next week when select athletes travel to the Augie Last Chance Qualifier on May 13-14 in preparation for the postseason.
