WAVERLY, Iowa. -- Led by a dominant pitching performance, the NWU baseball team downed Wartburg College (12-8) on Saturday afternoon for a 7-1 victory. The Prairie Wolves improved to 6-15 overall while earning the team's first conference win of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Garrett Walsh (2-2) tossed the first 6.2 scoreless and
Tyler Spreitzer closed out the effort with the final 2.1 to earn the save. It marks the first conference win of the season for the Prairie Wolves.
At the plate, the Prairie Wolves scored one run in the top of the second and the top of the fifth which would prove to be enough for Walsh. NWU added insurance runs in the top of the ninth and finished out the game with seven runs on ten hits.
Jumping ahead of the Knights with a run in the second inning, the Prairie Wolves two-out offense continued to show its resilience. With two retired,
Jaxon Volkmer worked himself on reaching on an error to score
Sam Schaefer.
Jake Shedarowich,
Duncan Ortega, and
Brady Bell each finished the game with two hits while Schaefer, Volkmer,
Easton Johnson and
Owen Duckworth each added one hit and a walk in the game.
The matchup was won on the mound, though, as the pitcher's duel saw both starters toss 6.2 strong innings. Walsh struck out four batters and scattered four hits in the win, improving to 2-2 on the year.
Spreitzer picked up his first save of the season by tossing the final 2.1 innings. He surrendered two hits, including an earned run in the ninth but promptly retired the next batter on a double play fly ball to center field to end the game and preserve the win.

The Prairie Wolves are back in action tomorrow Sunday, April 5 for games two and three against Wartburg. First pitch versus the Knights is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
