LINCOLN, Neb. - The Nebraska Wesleyan baseball team continued conference play on Saturday, battling through adversity in a doubleheader against Luther. Despite falling in both contests, the Prairie Wolves showed resilience and flashes of promise as they continue to grow early in the conference season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1 - Luther 5, Nebraska Wesleyan 2
Nebraska Wesleyan found itself locked in a pitching duel early, as both teams traded scoreless innings through the first. Luther broke through in the second inning and slowly built momentum, plating runs in the fifth and sixth to extend a 3-0 lead. The Prairie Wolves kept fighting and broke onto the scoreboard in the seventh inning. After applying pressure on the bases,
Sam Schaefer brought in a run after reaching on an error, cutting the deficit to 3-1. NWU added another run in the eighth when
Easton Johnson came around to score on a wild pitch, making it a two-run game. However, Luther answered with insurance runs in the eighth and ninth innings to secure the 5-2 victory.
Garrett Walsh delivered a strong start on the mound, going 6.2 innings while striking out seven and keeping NWU within striking distance throughout the contest. At the plate,
Easton Johnson led the way with a two-hit performance, while Schaefer contributed an RBI. The Prairie Wolves showed patience offensively, drawing six walks and creating opportunities despite facing a strong opposing pitching staff.
Game 2 - Luther 14, Nebraska Wesleyan 3 (8 Innings)
Game two saw Luther jump out early with a four-run second inning, followed by a steady offensive surge that built a sizable lead. Despite the deficit, Nebraska Wesleyan continued to battle and found a spark in the seventh inning. With the bases loaded,
Sam Schaefer delivered the biggest swing of the day a clutch three-RBI double to center field bringing the Prairie Wolves to life and cutting into the margin. NWU continued to compete throughout the game, with
Gavin Crogg collecting two hits and
Jaxon Volkmer adding a base hit and a run scored. On the mound, multiple Prairie Wolves arms combined to work through a challenging Luther lineup, with
Caleb DeWitt and
Ryan Johnson providing solid innings in relief.
