Baseball Drops Doubleheader Against No. 15 UW-Whitewater and CUW

PACE, Fla. - Senior shortstop Duncan Ortega, junior designated hitter Owen Duckworth, freshman right fielder Sam Schaefer and senior first baseman Brady Bell each had two hits in game one, and Schaefer had two hits, while senior third baseman Easton Johnson and junior catcher Ryan Ruggiero had two RBIs each in game two, but Nebraska Wesleyan baseball dropped both games of a non-conference baseball doubleheader at the Pensacola Blue Wahoos Challenge on Friday in Pensacola. Junior left-hander Eli Eldred started and took the pitching setback in the 12-8 opener, while junior right-hander Owen Duckworth took the mound loss in the 6-4, nightcap. The Prairie Wolves dropped to 3-7 overall, while the ranked Warhawks improved to 5-3, while the Falcons moved to 3-8.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1 - Wisconsin-Whitewater 12, Nebraska Wesleyan 8
In game one, NWU scored eight runs on 13 hits with two errors. UWW, ranked 15th in the latest D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25, scored 12 runs on 10 hits with two errors, scoring nine runs in the first inning, two runs in the fourth and one run in the ninth.

Bell (2-5), Ortega (2-4), Schaefer (2-5) and Duckworth (2-5) each collected two hits,. Bell hit a two run blast in the sixth and added another RBI in the ninth. Duckworth and Gavin Crogg each had doubles in the game. Ortega added a stolen base. 

Eldred (0-1) started on the mound for the Black & Gold and pitched the first 0.2 innings for the decision, scattering five hits and seven runs, six earned, with zero strikeout and two walks. Freshman right-hander Louis Hoffart tossed the next 3.0 innings, allowing four hits and four runs, earned, with one strikeout and two walks. Junior right-hander Charlie Mosser tossed the next 4.0 innings, allowing one hit and one run, unearned, with three strikeouts and six walks. Dominic Bentley got the final out on the mound for the Prairie Wolves. 

Game 2 - CUW 6, Nebraska Wesleyan 4
In game two, NWU scored four runs on seven hits with three errors, scoring two runs in each the second and seventh innings. CUW scored six runs on eight hits with two errors, scoring two runs each in the fourth and four in the fifth.

In the second, freshman left fielder Sam Schaefer (2-4) singled to left field with no one out, advanced to second with Charlie Mosser being hit by a pitch. Brady Bell then walked to load the bases. Ryan Ruggiero stepped up and hit into a fielders choice that scored both Schaefer and Mosser to take a 2-0 lead.

In the seventh the Prairie Wolves put together a two out rally to bring themselves back into the game, Ortega (1-4) singled to left field when Easton Johnson blasted a two-run shot over the left field wall to cut the deficit to 6-4.

Junior right-hander Owen Duckworth started on the mound for the Black & Gold and pitched the first 6.2 innings, scattering seven hits and six runs, two earned, with four strikeouts and no walks. Senior left-hander Dominic Sis pitched 2.1 innings, allowing one hit and zero runs with four strikeout and three walks.

NWU will continue play at the Pensacola Blue Wahoos Challenge tomorrow with a rematch against Carroll University at 1:00 PM.
