Lincoln, NE – The Nebraska Wesleyan University swimming teams made a splash this week, with both the men's and women's squads earning American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) Athlete of the Week honors for the week ending October 19th. The A-R-C recognized the Prairie Wolves' outstanding performances on Monday afternoon.
Sophomore Zachary Cantorna and senior Elena Lazzaretto were both selected as A-R-C Swimmer of the Week after dominant performances at the dual against Simpson College over the weekend. The Prairie Wolves showcased their depth and talent, with the men securing a decisive 161-40 victory and the women dominating with a 160-20 win.
Cantorna, earning his second career A-R-C Swimmer of the Week award and first of the season, played a pivotal role in the men's team's success. He secured first-place finishes in two events. Cantorna touched the wall first in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:51.35 and the 100 backstroke in 54.87. Adding to his impressive performance, he also led off the 200 freestyle relay team, contributing to their second-place finish.
Lazzaretto, a seasoned veteran, garnered A-R-C Female Swimmer of the Week honors for the fifth time in her illustrious career. She continued to showcase her dominance, winning both of her individual events over the weekend. Lazzaretto posted a time of 2:17.86 in the 200 individual medley and 1:10.46 in the 100 breaststroke, solidifying her status as a top swimmer in the conference.
Cantorna, Lazzaretto, and their NWU teammates will compete in their next event in four days as they'll host Minnesota-Morris inside the Weary Natatorium on Friday, October 24, at 6 p.m.
