Baseball Bounces Back To Win Series Finale, Takes Series From Wartburg


LINCOLN, Neb. (April 3, 2021) - Nebraska Wesleyan baseball (5-13, 3-9 A-R-C) split Saturday's doubleheader against Wartburg (7-11, 5-7 A-R-C) to win the series, 3-1. NWU dropped game one 17-3 then bounced back to win game two by run rule, 14-3. It is the first time since joining the American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) that NWU has won a series against the Knights.

Game One Recap
The Prairie Wolves would not go away without a fight in game one as they scored three runs in the final frame. Trayven Boellstorff turned a leadoff walk into NWU's first run when he scored off a pinch hit single from Daniel Hundley. Down to their last out, Darrien Costello-Justus ripped a two-run home run to left field, his first home run of the season. 

Game Two Recap
After a scoreless first inning, the Prairie Wolves jumped on the Knights with nine runs in the next three innings. Paul Georget hit a single to drive in the first NWU run in the second inning. In the third inning, Riley Ward scored off of a John Haimowitz single. Haimowitz later scored on a wild pitch before Geroget recorded a single to score Kaleb Knox and Noah Unger. 

The high-powered offense continued in the fourth inning with Mason Bennett scoring on a Haimowitz single to center field. The Knights traded a double play ball for a run during the next at-bat to score Ward. Unger then added an RBI single before Will Schneidewind knocked a double to left and scored Unger.

Wartburg added two runs in the fifth and another in the seventh but Nebraska Wesleyan countered with five runs in the bottom of the seventh. A bases loaded walk scored Aaron Nichols for the 10th run before Kaleb Knox hit a grand slam to left field to apply the run rule.

On the mound, Riley Ward went 6 â…“ innings to earn the win. He gave up just one extra base hit and struck out four batters with only one walk.

Nebraska Wesleyan hosts Dubuque for a four game set at NWU Field beginning on Friday, April 9.
