Baseball Forces Saturday Split With Game One Win


INDIANOLA, Iowa (April 24, 2021) - Nebraska Wesleyan baseball (9-22, 7-17 A-R-C) split its doubleheader at Simpson College (10-16, 7-13 A-R-C) in Indianola, Iowa. NWU won game one, 6-2, before Simpson won the series finale, 6-4.

Game One Recap
After Simpson plated a run in the first inning, Nebraska Wesleyan countered with a run a half-inning later. An SC error allowed Riley Ward to reach base and score Paul Georget

As both defenses settled in over the next two and half innings, NWU broke open the tied ballgame with three runs in the fifth inning. Kaleb Knox drilled a two run home run then later in the inning, John Haimowitz scored off of a single from Will Scheneidewind. The Prairie Wolves added two additional runs the next inning. Mason Bennett scored off of a Derek Kolbush sacrifice fly before Ward was plated by an RBI single from Knox.

Riley Ward tossed five innings for Nebraska Wesleyan with just one run allowed on six hits and five strikeouts. Aiden Bennett and Josh Seifert each threw an inning of relief work and combined to allow one run on one hit.

Game Two Recap
Nebraska Wesleyan was forced to play catch up early after allowing four runs in the second inning. They got a run back when Alex Angele scored off an RBI single from Riley Ward. But Simpson countered with two runs in the third inning. 

In sixth inning, the Prairie Wolves tried to comeback as they scored three runs. Noah Unger knocked a double down the left field line to score Derek Kolbush and Ward. A balk allowed Kaleb Knox to score and make it a two-run game but NWU could not get another run across the rest of the way.  

What's Next
Nebraska Wesleyan plays its final road series of the season with a four-game set against Central College. The series begins Friday, April 30 with game one set for 1 p.m. in Pella, Iowa.
