Disappointing Day in Dubuque for NWU Baseball

DUBUQUE, Iowa – University of Dubuque extended their winning streak to seven games as the Spartans swept past Nebraska Wesleyan in an American Rivers Conference baseball doubleheader on Friday afternoon (April 26) in Dubuque, Iowa.  Dubuque won game one 11-6, then took the second game 13-3 in seven innings.
 
NWU has now lost five straight games and remains in seventh place in the American Rivers Conference standings with a 7-13 league record.  The Prairie Wolves are 9-23 overall with five games remaining.
 
The Prairie Wolves and Spartans were tied 2-2 in the 5th inning of game one, then a huge inning by the Spartans broke the game open.  Dubuque scored eight runs in the bottom of the 5th inning to take a 10-2 lead.  They added one more run in the 7th inning and held off a late rally.
 
In the 8th inning, the Prairie Wolves were able to score three runs making the score 11-6.  Two runners were on base as NWU tried to mount a rally, but Spartans relief pitcher forced a fielder's choice to end the threat.
 
Spencer Scheer drove in the first NWU run in the 2nd inning when he executed a sacrifice squeeze but to bring in Evan GellatlyBrook Johnson tripled on the 1st pitch of the 5th inning then scored on a sacrifice fly from Riley Ward.
 
Jack Wojtalewicz hit a pinch hit RBI single in the 6th inning, the Tyler Winterstein had the big hit in the 8th inning with a 2-run double.

Tucker McHugh took the loss on the mound for the Prairie Wolves allowing seven earned runs on 10 hits in four innings of work as the starter.
 
NWU finished with 13 hits in the game with four players having multi-hit performances.  Kaleb Knox led the way going 3-5, while Ward and Winterstein each had two RBI.
 
Game two got off to a good start for the Prairie Wolves, but once again it was a big inning by Dubuque that broke the game open.  The Spartans scored 12 unanswered runs and would go on to earn the win by the run rule.
 
To start the game, Derek Kolbush and Knox each had RBI singles giving NWU a 2-0 lead.  From there, it was all Dubuque.
 
The first nine Spartans reached safely in the 2nd inning on eight consecutive hits and a walk off NWU starter Riley Ward.  Dubuque scored six runs in the inning.  They scored four unearned runs in the 3rd inning, aided by a 2-run home run.
 
Derek Kolbush hit a solo home run in the top of the 6th inning for the other Prairie Wolves run.  Kolbush finished the game 2-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.

Ward took the loss allowing 12 earned runs on 15 hits with three walks in 3 1/3 innings.
 
Game three of the series was scheduled for Saturday but will be moved to Sunday due to weather.
