LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Wesleyan baseball team kept their postseason hopes alive by taking game one of the series with Central College 12-11 on Friday afternoon (May 3) in American Rivers Conference baseball action. NWU needs to sweep the Dutch to get in the top six of the league standings and earn a spot in the A-R-C Postseason Tournament that starts next week.
The deciding doubleheader is set for Saturday starting at 1:00 pm at NWU Field in Woods Park. NWU will also honor their six seniors between games.
Spencer Scheer blasted a grand slam over the left field wall to break open an 8-8 tie game giving the Prairie Wolves a 12-8 lead in the 6
th inning. Central threatened by scoring three runs in the top of the 8
th inning, but
Josh Seifert got out of the inning, then retired the Dutch in order in the 9
th to get the save and seal the victory.
In a game that featured 31 combined hits and 23 runs, it was the Prairie Wolves that struck first in the 1
st inning. NWU scored three runs in the inning, getting a two-run double from
Derek Kolbush and an RBI double from
Kaleb Knox scored Kolbush giving the Prairie Wolves three doubles in the inning.
Central responded right away scoring four runs in the 2
nd inning to re-take the lead. The Dutch recorded five hits to score four runs in the 2
nd. NWU tied the game in the bottom of the inning.
Jackson Cummins singled, then Scheer put down a bunt single and the Dutch third baseman threw the ball past the first baseman allowing Cummins to score from first.
NWU took the lead in the 3
rd inning scoring another unearned run.
Evan Gellatly singled, stole a base and scored on an error by the second baseman.
The Dutch put together another four-run inning in the 5
th inning to lead 8-5. NWU got an RBI single from
Aaron Nichols in the 5
th inning making it 8-6 headed to the 6
th.
Nebraska Wesleyan would score six runs in the 6
th, highlighted by the Scheer grand slam. Gellatly also drove in two runs with a double to right field as the Prairie Wolves sent 10 to the plate in the inning.
Scheer, Gellatly and
Riley Ward each had three hits for the Prairie Wolves. Scheer had four RBI, with Gellatlly driving in two with a double.
Tucker McHugh pitched three innings of relief to earn the victory on the mound. He allowed three runs on five hits taking over for
Hayden Parker.
Josh Seifert threw the final 1 2/3 innings to earn his third save of the year.
