STORM LAKE, Iowa – Three days after setting a school record for runs scored, the Nebraska Wesleyan baseball team had their offense shut down by Buena Vista University as the Beavers swept a doubleheader over the Prairie Wolves in American Rivers Conference action. BVU won the first game 8-1, then took game two 9-4 in Storm Lake, Iowa to win the season series.
In a matchup of two teams that entered the day within one game of each other in the standings, it was the Beavers that came away with the big victories. BVU moved to 10-8 in league play and now sits tied for 3
rd in the American Rivers Conference, while NWU drops to 7-11 in conference action. The Prairie Wolves are now 7
th in the league, on the outside looking in with top six earning a spot in the postseason tournament. NWU has two more three game series remaining on the year.
NWU jumped ahead 1-0 in the first game when the Prairie Wolves struck early in the top of the 1
st inning.
Evan Gellatly singled to drive in
Riley Ward who had singled earlier in the inning. Unfortunately for the Prairie Wolves that was the only run of the game.
Buena Vista tied the game with a run in the 2
nd inning, then added three more in the 3
rd inning on a pair of doubles. The Beavers broke open the contest in the 4
th inning when they scored four runs taking advantage of two NWU errors.
The Prairie Wolves finished with eight hits in the game, but only one extra base hit and only three hits after the 2
nd inning. BVU pitcher Tyler Tennyson threw eight innings allowing one run on eight hits with six strikeouts.
Sam Condello took the loss on the mound for NWU allowing four earned runs in three innings.
BVU got out to a fast start in the second game leading 6-0 after three innings and that was too big of a lead for the Prairie Wolves too overcome.
Gellatly hit a solo home run in the top of the 4
th inning to get the Prairie Wolves on the board. BVU responded with two more runs to make the score 8-1.
Riley Ward hit an RBI double in the 7
th for the Prairie Wolves then NWU added two more in the 9
th inning. Two walks and two hit batters gave the Prairie Wolves a couple more runs, but it was too late.
Hayden Parker started the game for the Prairie Wolves lasting only two innings giving up five earned runs. NWU had eight total hits in the game, with
Tyler Winterstein going 2-3 to lead the NWU offense.
