LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska Wesleyan shattered the school record for runs scored in a game on Saturday (April 20) when the Prairie Wolves put up 30 runs in a 30-10 victory over Luther College in game two of an American Rivers Conference baseball doubleheader at NWU Field. The Norse won the first game 14-11 in a doubleheader that lasted over seven hours.
NWU took two out of three games against the Norse as the Prairie Wolves put on an offensive show. In three game, NWU combined to score 51 runs in three games. NWU is now 9-19 overall and 7-9 in conference play to sit alone in 6
th place in the league standings.
The school record 30 runs are the 4
th most runs scored in an NCAA III game this season. NWU's previous high for runs in a game was 25.
In the 1
st inning of game two, Luther started off by scoring five runs in the top of 1
st. The Prairie Wolves came back to score 10 runs in the bottom of the inning. NWU had nine hits in the inning, including two home runs and four doubles.
Brook Johnson and
Tyler Winterstein both hit 2-run home runs.
NWU had five home runs in the record-setting performance with one triple and eight doubles finishing with 26 total hits.
Once the Prairie Wolves got up 10-5, they came back to score seven runs in the 3
rd inning to lead 17-7.
Riley Ward hit a 2-run triple and
Will Watkins blasted a 3-run home run to highlight the inning. NWU scored two runs in the 4
th inning, six in the 5
th and five more in the 6
th. The Prairie Wolves batted around in four innings.
Spencer Scheer hit a 3-run home run in the 5
th inning and
Derek Kolbush had a 3-run HR in the 6
th inning. The only inning the Prairie Wolves didn't score was in the 2
nd inning.
Six different Prairie Wolves had at least four RBI in the game.
Tyler Winterstein and
Spencer Scheer led the way with five RBI. Winterstein went 3-6 with a HR while Scheer was 3-6 with a HR and double.
Riley Ward was 3-4, scored six runs, hit two doubles, one triple and drove in four.
Will Watkins finished 3-4 with four RBI hitting a HR and double.
Brook Johnson scored four runs, went 3-4 with four RBI including a home run and double.
Derek Kolbush hit a HR, double and four RBI going 3-6.
NWU got ahead 2-0 in the opening game of the day scoring one run in each of the first two innings. Scheer hit an RBI single in the 1
st and
Kaleb Knox hit a solo HR in the 2
nd inning. Luther tied the game at 2-2in the 3
rd inning.
The Norse would score 12 unanswered runs to take a 12-3 lead in the 7
th inning. NWU trailed 14-3 going to the bottom of the 9
th inning.
In the bottom of the 9
th inning the Prairie Wolves tried to mount a huge rally as they scored eight total runs. Starting the inning trailing by 11, NWU had the tying run at the plate in the 9
th until a fielder's choice ended the game.
The inning started with four straight walks followed by a sacrifice fly. Kolbush then blasted a 3-run home run to clear the bases. Two more runs came in on wild pitches and Knox hit an RBI single but that was as close as they would get.
Knox finished 3-5 with a HR and two RBI, while Kolbush was 2-5 with a HR and three RBI. The Prairie Wolves ended the game with 13 hits in game one and 39 for the day.
NWU looks to keep up the momentum on Tuesday when they travel to Storm Lake, Iowa to face Buena Vista University. BVU is one game ahead of NWU in the league standings.
