NWU Men Close Regular Season by Splitting IIAC Matches

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Wesleyan men's tennis team closed out the regular season on Saturday by splitting a pair of home matches at Woods Park.  The Prairie Wolves started the day with a 6-3 win over Buena Vista University, then dropped a 7-2 decision to Wartburg College.
 
The Prairie Wolves end the regular season with a 4-4 mark in Iowa Conference play to currently sit 5th in the league standings. The top six teams in the final regular season standings qualify for the IIAC Postseason Tournament which will be held May 5-6 in Cedar Rapids. 
 
In the win over BVU, the Prairie Wolves took two out of three doubles matches to jump ahead early.  Adam Olson and Matheus dos Santon blanked their opponents 8-0 at No. 2 doubles, then Jordan Pieper and Nathan Seaton won by the same score at No. 3 doubles.
 
NWU won four of the six singles matches, with their two losses both coming in three sets.  Hale Breit swept Aaron Pluym 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, and Christian Cannon also won 6-0, 6-0 over Gosler of BVU at No. 6 singles.  Gabriel Sellmer was a 6-4, 6-3 winner at the No. 4 spot and Matheus dos Santon won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 singles.
 
The Beavers won the singles matches at No. 1 and No. 2.  Chris Habermann defeated Pedro Behtlem 7-6, 2-6, 10-4 at No. 1 and Jesse Brace edged Adam Olson 4-6, 6-1, 10-5 at No. 2 singles.
 
 
Against Wartburg, the Prairie Wolves picked up one victory in doubles play.  Jordan Pieper and Jared Scherling defeated Jeremy Ellerby and Colin Jacobs 8-0 at No. 3 doubles.  The Knights won the other two matches, 8-1 at No. 1 doubles and 9-7 at No. 2.
 
NWU's only win in singles play came at No. 6 singles.  Christian Cannon won 6-3, 6-1, over Jacobs to earn his second victory on the day.
 
The Prairie Wolves will now wait to see if they will earn a postseason spot as the other IIAC schools conclude their competition this week.
