LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Wesleyan men's tennis team picked up their first ever Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory on Sunday (Apr. 2) as they shutout Simpson College, 9-0, at Knight Fieldhouse on the NWU campus. NWU dropped the first match of the weekend, 9-0, to Luther College on Saturday morning.
In the win over Simpson, the Prairie Wolves won all three doubles matches then won five of the six singles matches in straight sets. They took the final singles match in three sets to earn their first shutout of the year and the first for the program since April 15, 2014.
Pedro Bethlem and
Hale Breit won 8-4 at No. 1 doubles over the Storm,
Adam Olson and
Matheus Bustamante were 8-1 winners at No. 2 and
Jordan Pieper joined
Nathan Seaton to win 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.
Bethlem got the singles wins started with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 1. Olson won 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot, Breit was a straight set 6-1, 6-1 winner at No. 3, Bustamante won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 and
Christian Cannon won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 6 singles.
Gabriel Sellmer had the longest match of the day winning 4-6, 6-2, 10-6 at No. 4 singles.
Against Luther College, the Norse blanked the Prairie Wolves 9-0 to improve to 13-3 and 3-0 in IIAC to sit on top of the league standings. Luther is ranked #16 in the region.
