NWU Hands #10 Jamestown First Loss of Season

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Tyler Winterstein drove in Jordan Haas on a single up the middle with two outs in the bottom of the 7th inning to give Nebraska Wesleyan a 1-0 upset victory over 10th-ranked University of Jamestown in game one of a baseball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.

The victory for the Prairie Wolves was the first loss of the season for the Jimmies as they had won 25 straight games to begin the year.  Jamestown did come back to win the second game 5-1 to finish the four-game series with three victories.

With the game tied 0-0 headed to the bottom of the 7th,  Matt Orozco opened the inning by reaching on an error by the first baseman.  Courtesy runner Jordan Haas moved to second on a sacrifice by Joe Babic.  Pinch hitter Mark Korsakas walked to put runners on first and second with one out.  Chase Powers grounded into a fielder's choice to shortstop forcing out the runner at second base putting runners at first and third.

Winterstein, who was last week's AD3I Player of the Week, stepped to the plate with the winning run just 90 feet away.  The freshman calmly hit a sharp single up the middle for the win and was met by the entire dugout in a mob at first base.

Another freshman, Brody Murphy, was equally as impressive on the mound for the Prairie Wolves.  Murphy got the complete game 2-hit shutout.  He struck out five batters to improve to 4-2 on the season as he leads the team in victories.

The winning run in the bottom of the 7th snapped a streak of 23 consecutive scoreless innings for the Prairie Wolves.

Game two was another pitcher's dual through the first five innings with each team scoring only run.

Jamestown got their first run of the day in the top of the fourth inning to go ahead 1-0.

NWU answered in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game.  A single by James McKain opened the inning followed by a bunt single by Sam Ayars.  Pete Sitorius looked to lay down a sacrifice bunt that ended up being a perfect placement to earn the single.  The pitcher still tried to make a play at first base and threw the ball over first base allowing McKain to score.

The potential big inning was spoiled as Ayars was caught at home trying to advance on a wild pitch.  Two straight intentional walks had the bases loaded, but two fly outs ended the threat.

Jamestown took advantage of an error in the top of the 6th inning as they scored the eventual game-winning run.  The Jimmies added three more runs in the seventh inning to put the game out of reach.

McKain and Sitorius both had two hits to lead the NWU offense.  For the fourth straight game, the Prairie Wolves were held without an extra base hit.

Caleb Thiessen took the loss on the mound, despite a solid performance.  Thiessen pitched 5+ innings allowing only one earned run on five hits.

NWU is now off for two weeks when they will begin Great Plains Athletic Conference play.
