LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Nebraska Wesleyan men's tennis team opened the spring portion of the 2015-16 season with a victory on Friday night (Jan. 29) over Ottawa University. NWU fell to Augustana College on Saturday night.
Against Ottawa on Friday at Woods Park, the Prairie Wolves prevailed with a 5-4 victory. The Braves were playing with just five players, but NWU still posted four singles victories.
To start the night in doubles play, Ottawa won both in competitive matches.Â
Trevor Milburn and
Pedro Bethlem fell 8-6 at No. 1 doubles to Mekasha Tadious and Jorge Miguel Ramirez. At No. 2 doubles,
Hale Breit and
Adam Olson lost 8-6 to Bobby Vo and Brandon Edwards. The duo of
Jordan Pieper and
Gabriel Sellmer won by forfeit at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, NWU picked up two straight set victories and one three set thriller.Â
Hale Breit won 6-4, 7-6 over Edwards at No. 4 singles and
Matheus Bustamante was a 6-1, 6-4 winner at No. 5 singles.Â
Pedro Bethlem was the other winner for the Prairie Wolves at No. 2 singles in a 6-7, 7-6, 10-7 match.
On Saturday night against NCAA II Augustana, the Prairie Wolves fell 8-1 to the Vikings.
The lone win for NWU came at No. 5 singles as
Adam Olson defeated Austin VanderWelde 7-5, 3-6, 10-3 to earn the victory. Augustana won the other five singles matches in straight sets.
