Women's Tennis Stays Unbeaten in GPAC; Men Come Up Just Short of 1st Win

LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Nebraska Wesleyan University women's tennis team improved to 4-0 in Great Plains Athletic Conference play with a 6-3 victory over Concordia University on Wednesday afternoon.  The NWU men fell just short of their bid for a GPAC win as they lost 6-3 to the Bulldogs at the Nebraska Tennis Center.

The Prairie Wolves women evened their overall record at 9-9 and stay atop the league standings with their unbeaten 4-0 conference record.  Only one other GPAC team, Morningside College, is undefeated on the year.

NWU defeated the Bulldogs on Wednesday playing without their No. 1 player Gaby Chaparro.  The Prairie Wolves all moved up one spot and didn't miss a beat in the match.  NWU took two out of the three doubles matches with Natalie Cech & Katherine Ternent winning 8-3 at No. 1 doubles and Courtney Harder & Tori VanDeVeer winning 8-3 at No. 3.  The No. 2 doubles team of Jennifer Heywood and Jaime Bridges was edged out 9-7 by Emily Meisinger and Elyse Kohl.

The top three players all won their singles matches for the Prairie Wolves.  Ternent moved up to No. 1, Cech at No. 2 and Heywood at No.3.  The other singles win was at No. 5 with VanDeVeer getting a 6-0, 6-0 win.

In the men's match, the Prairie Wolves fought hard to earn their first GPAC victory but came up short in a tightly contested match with the Bulldogs.

Singles play saw three matches going three sets.  Bethlem got his first victory of the season at No. 2 singles defeating Patricio Esquivel 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2).   Pieper was the other NWU player getting a singles victory as he was a 6-1, 4-6, 10-5 winner in three sets over Jonathan Heckman.

One of the closest matches of the day came at No. 3 singles with Jonathan Douglas of Concordia edging out Hale Breit from NWU, 5-7, 7-6 (4), 10-3.
