NWU Men Survive With 89-84 Win over Dakota Wesleyan

Nebraska Wesleyan hit 6-6 from the free throw line in the final 32 seconds of the game as they held off a furious comeback by Dakota Wesleyan University for a 89-84 victory over the Tigers in the Great Plains Athletic Conference men's basketball opener at The Pentagon in SIoux Falls, S.D.

NWU led by 24 points midway through the second half, but DWU went on a 16-0 run and got within two points in the final minute of the game.  Unlike last season's game that saw the Prairie Wolves blow a 14-point second half lead, this year the Prairie Wolves survived to remain unbeaten on the year at 3-0, 1-0 in GPAC.

Jonah Bradley went 4-4 and Andrew Mitteis hit 2-2 free throws with 6.6 seconds remaining to seal the win.

The Prairie Wolves were held without a field goal the final 6:37 of the game.  Trey Bardsley hit back-to-back 3-pointers with just under 7:00 remaining to put NWU up 82-62, but they would not make a field goal the rest of the way. 

Trevor Johnson scored a career-high 28 points to lead the Prairie Wolves as NWU dominated the inside game and got the Tigers into foul trouble early.  Johnson was 8-14 from the floor and 12-18 from the free throw line.

Five players finished in double figures for NWU.  Jonah Bradley scored 15 points, Trent Scheitel scored 12 and Trey Bardsley and Eric Jackson each scored 10.

The Prairie Wolves shot 53.8 percent from the field for the game after hitting 59.8 in the first half where they built up a 50-36 lead.  NWU finished 28-40 from the free throw line for the game as the two teams combined for 54 fouls.

Dakota Wesleyan had all five starters in double figures led by point guard Tate Martin with 18 points and eight assists.  Trae Bergh had 17 points on 3-8 from 3-point range.
