Prairie Wolves Split Doubleheader at Space Coast Games, Top Greenville Before Falling to Messiah

Box Score 1 MELBOURNE, Fla. — Nebraska Wesleyan turned in a statement performance in the opener before running out of answers in the nightcap, splitting a Tuesday doubleheader at the Space Coast Complex. The Prairie Wolves shut down Greenville University 8-1 in the morning before Messiah University rallied for a 10-7 win in the afternoon, leaving Nebraska Wesleyan at 5-5 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Nebraska Wesleyan 8, Greenville 1

Junior Eva Fahrnbruch was the story in the opener, delivering a complete-game effort while doing equal damage in the batter's box. The Aurora, Neb., native tossed all seven innings, scattering five hits and allowing just one earned run while striking out one to improve to 3-2 on the season. At the plate, Fahrnbruch went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a double as the Prairie Wolves handled a Greenville squad they knocked off in the NCAA Regionals a year ago.

Junior Taylor Korecky supplied the power. The Lincoln, Neb., native went 2-for-3 with two home runs, a solo shot to left field in the second inning and a two-run blast in the sixth, finishing with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Nebraska Wesleyan led 2-1 through five innings before the offense broke loose with three-run frames in both the sixth and seventh. In the sixth, Fahrnbruch doubled down the left-field line to score senior Jenna Kimberling, then Korecky launched her second homer to push the lead to 5-1. The seventh kept the pressure on as Catie Ingalls (Edmonds, Wash.) singled to center to score Macy Santoni, a throwing error by the Greenville catcher allowed another run to score, and sophomore Paige Comstock (Ashland, Neb.) singled to right to cap the scoring. Greenville's only run came on a solo home run by Anna Cox in the bottom of the second.

Game 2: Messiah 10, Nebraska Wesleyan 7
The second game turned in a hurry. Messiah took a 1-0 lead in the first before the Prairie Wolves answered when Comstock singled to right to score Ingalls and knot it at one. But the Falcons erupted for three runs in the second and five more in the third, capitalizing on an error and key hits, to seize a 9-1 advantage that proved an insurmountable hole.

Freshman Lexus Hill started in the circle before freshman Kolbi Davis (Omaha, Neb.) took over and was charged with the loss. Fahrnbruch entered in relief and threw the final four innings for Nebraska Wesleyan.

The Prairie Wolves refused to go quietly, plating three runs in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh to pull within three, but could not complete the comeback. Kimberling went 2-for-4 with two RBIs to pace the offense, while freshman Ella Wolff (Omaha, Neb.) contributed two hits and scored a run.
