INDIANOLA, Iowa – The Nebraska Wesleyan University women's basketball team fell 105-54 to Simpson College on Wednesday night at Cowles Fieldhouse.
The Prairie Wolves (1-12, 0-5 ARC) were paced by Brynn Sebek, who led all NWU scorers with 17 points, including a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc in the second half. Maddie Demke chipped in 13 points, going 4-for-6 from the field, while Carney Black led the team in rebounds with eight.
Simpson (8-7, 4-2 ARC) set the tone early with an explosive offense, shooting a blistering 57.1% from the floor. The Storm hit 12 three-pointers, including five each from Haley Rasmussen and Molly Lutmer, who tied for the game-high with 19 points apiece.
How It Happened
The Prairie Wolves faced a tough task early as Simpson raced to a 27-10 lead after the first quarter. NWU found themselves on their heels against a Simpson team that capitalized on turnovers, scoring 39 points off NWU's 22 miscues.
In the second quarter, the Storm's efficient shooting continued, hitting 72.2% of their shots. Simpson's aggressive defense limited NWU to just 21.4% shooting from the field in the period, as the Storm closed the half on a dominant 25-25run to take a 60-22 lead into the break.
Nebraska Wesleyan found a spark in the third quarter, nearly outscoring Simpson 22-24, their best offensive stretch of the night. Demke and Sebek got things rolling midway through the period, sparking a 7-0 run for NWU. Despite their efforts, Simpson's balanced attack kept the margin secure.
In the final quarter, Simpson's reserves contributed 21 points, continuing their dominance in the paint. NWU fought until the final whistle, with Kiara Burnell knocking down a pair of late triples to cap her strong final quarter.
