DUBUQUE, Iowa – Nebraska Wesleyan fell to Dubuque, 74-46, in a Wednesday night American Rivers Conference matchup. The loss moves the Prairie Wolves to 1-18 on the season and 0-10 in conference play, while the Spartans improve to 8-11 overall and 5-5 in league action.
How It Happened
Dubuque exploded out of the gate, scoring 12 points in less than four minutes to take a 12-0 lead. A three-pointer from Brynn Sebek got the Prairie Wolves on the board, but Dubuque countered with a 10-0 run to extend their lead to 22-3 with just under four minutes remaining in the first quarter. Sebek then scored nine points on three made three-pointers as Nebraska Wesleyan closed the quarter on an 11-4 run.
In the second quarter, the two teams traded baskets before Nebraska Wesleyan cut the lead to 11 on a Carney Black three-pointer with 7:30 remaining until halftime. However, the Spartans responded with a pair of layups to go up 37-22. The teams continued to exchange baskets over the final five minutes, and Dubuque carried a 45-28 lead into halftime. Despite the deficit, NWU shot 50% from the floor in the first half.
Dubuque continued to dominate on both ends of the court in the third quarter, outscoring Nebraska Wesleyan 17-6 while holding the Prairie Wolves to a 9.09% shooting percentage. Sebek led NWU with five points in the quarter.
Down 62-32, Nebraska Wesleyan continued to battle in the fourth quarter. The team shot 36.36% from the floor and scored 12 points, led by Kiara Burnell, who finished the period with five points. However, the deficit proved too much to overcome as Dubuque secured the 74-46 victory.
