LINCOLN, Neb. (September 11, 2024) – After falling behind 2-0, Nebraska Wesleyan dug deep and pulled off three straight set victories to secure a 3-2 comeback win over Grinnell.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Nebraska Wesleyan started strong in the first set, building a 15-12 lead. However, Grinnell responded with a 5-2 run to tie the game at 17. The Pioneers then extended their lead to 24-20 before NWU battled back with three consecutive points. Despite the rally, Grinnell finished the set with a decisive kill to win 25-23.
In set two, the Pioneers dominated for most of the game, leading by as much as 20-11. The Prairie Wolves managed to claw back and cut the deficit to 24-20, but Grinnell held on to win the set 25-20.
Facing a must-win situation in set three, Nebraska Wesleyan left it all on the court. They led at the halfway point, but Grinnell fought back to take a 16-15 lead. The Prairie Wolves responded by outscoring the Pioneers 10-4, earning a 25-20 set victory and forcing a fourth set. Addie Thomas recorded five kills during the set.
Grinnell started strong again in set four, taking a 9-8 lead. But from that point on, it was all Nebraska Wesleyan, as the Prairie Wolves took control, never looking back after taking a 10-9 lead, and secured a 25-19 victory to force a decisive fifth set.
In the final set, Nebraska Wesleyan faced match point, trailing 14-12. However, the resilient Prairie Wolves scored four straight points to complete the comeback with a gutsy 16-14 set victory.
