HAMPTEN-SYDNEY, VA. (March 8, 2024) - Behind a combined 68 points from Carter Glenn, Peter Lash, Conner Brown, and Landon Torneten, Nebraska Wesleyan advanced to its first Elite Eight since the 2018 National Championship team, with a 74-70 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday, March 8.
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ Â Â
- The victory pushed the Prairie Wolves to 26-4 on the season, while the C-M-S season came to a close at 23-7.Â
- The game began with Nebraska Wesleyan on fire as the Prairie Wolves made four of their first five shots to build a 9–5 lead. With ten minutes remaining in the first half, that lead was 24-20. The Lincoln native, Glenn, scored 14 points on a couple of three-pointers, a few two-point layups, and a jump shot to power the Prairie Wolves' early run.
- The Stags remained determined, but Glenn's buzzer-beating turnaround jumper put Nebraska Wesleyan ahead 44–32 at the half.
- Early in the second half, the Stags made their presence felt by going on an 8-2 run to cut the lead to 46-40. The two points for Nebraska Wesleyan came via a tremendous put-back slam by Jack Groeteke.
- With 6:28 remaining, Nebraska Wesleyan extended their advantage to 15 points with a run, but Claremont-Mudd-Scripps fought back, cutting the Prairie Wolf lead to 64-54 with a 5-0 run at 3:54 in the second half.
- As the Prairie Wolves tried to put the Stags away, C-M-S continued to hit timely three-point shots to keep them within arms reach. The Prairie Wolves held on to a 70-62 lead.
- Lash missed the front end of a one-and-one, giving the Stags some life. On the next possession for C-M-S, Josh Angle converted an and-one after a putback to cut the Prairie Wolf lead to 70-65.
- Torneten was fouled and hit one-of-two free throws to give the Prairie Wolves a six-point cushion with 36 seconds remaining.
- The Stags once again hit a timely corner three to make it a one-possession game for the first time since the middle of the first half. The Stags kept the pressure on, forcing the Prairie Wolves to call a timeout with 18 seconds to play, after struggling to get the ball inbounds.
- The Prairie Wolves would get the ball into Lash, who hit both free throws to give the Prairie Wolves a two-possession lead. The Stags would go quick and find a cutter down the lane for a layup to make it 73-70 Prairie Wolves.
- Glenn would put the game away, hitting one of the final two free throws of the game with :09 seconds remaining. The Stags would have one last prayer that came up short, missing a three-point attempt as time expired.Â
- Nebraska Wesleyan is now 7-0 on a neutral floor this season.
