First Win of the Season Caps Off 2024 for the Prairie Wolves

SAINT PAUL, Minn. — Nebraska Wesleyan women's basketball closed out 2024 in dominant fashion, securing their first win of the season with an 83-52 victory over Crown College (Minn.) on New Year's Eve. The win, part of the University of Northwestern Holiday Tournament, marked the first victory for head coach Jim Wiedie at the helm of the Prairie Wolves program.

NWU (1-10) came out hot, setting the tone early with a 27-point first quarter, powered by sharp shooting and relentless defense. The Prairie Wolves never looked back, maintaining control through all four quarters in their most complete performance of the season.

How It Happened

The Prairie Wolves wasted no time asserting themselves. Tessa Skelton and Carney Black ignited a 14-6 run midway through the first quarter, combining for seven points and forcing Crown into a series of turnovers. Brynn Sebek added a strong outside presence, tallying a pair of threes during the opening frame.

NWU's defense was suffocating, holding Crown to just 33.3% shooting in the second quarter. Skelton made her presence felt with eight points to extend the Prairie Wolves' lead to 42-25 at halftime.

Coming out of the break, the Prairie Wolves caught fire, shooting an impressive 64.7% from the field in the third quarter. Alexa Back drilled a three, and Skelton added a fast-break layup off a steal, sparking a 12-0 run that ballooned the lead to 35 points. The fourth quarter saw the reserves take over and seal the deal, capping off the win in style.
