Thomas Reaches Milestone as Volleyball Gets First Ranked Win Since 2014, Securing Two Wins on Saturday

HOW IT HAPPENED

Cornell
  • Junior Addie Thomas reached another milestone as the Nebraska Wesleyan volleyball team got their first ranked victory since 2014, defeating #24 Cornell, 3-1 (5-25, 25-15, 25-12, 25-21), Saturday morning in Rock Island, Ill..
  • Thomas was outstanding on both sides of the ball, with 18 kills and only eight errors, .204 percent on top of 10 digs and one block. She has already exceeded the 700-dig mark in her career as a result of her performance.
  • Jaclyn Riedl finished with five kills. Nebraska Wesleyan hit .250 percent. As a group, they hit .183 percent. Elecea Saathoff had 31 assists, while Nyah Chambers and Molly Ramirez each had two blocks to pace the defense. Nebraska Wesleyan had a total of eight aces.
  • Elecea Saathoff smacked an early ace in the first set, but the Prairie Wolves couldn't fend off Cornell's greatest hitting % of the match, .538 percent, and the Prairie Wolves fell in the first frame.
  • With the score 1-0, it was all Nebraska Wesleyan the rest of the way. 
  • Nebraska Wesleyan's response was amazing. Its greatest hitting percentage in the match was .423 in the second frame. Thomas had five kills and no errors while Riedl had two. 
  • Nebraska Wesleyan's offensive continued to find its stride in the third and fourth sets, combining for 19 kills and only nine errors. 
  • In the fourth set, the Prairie Wolves locked down on both sides of the ball and held the Rams to a .086 hitting % on way to the victory.
Augustana
  • In Rock Island, Illinois, the Prairie Wolves (21-7, 7-1) faced the Augustana Vikings (23-7, 4-4) in a Saturday afternoon thriller. The Prairie Wolves defeated the Vikings in five sets (20-25, 13-25, 25-17, 26-24, 15-12).
  • Nebraska Wesleyan moves to 21-7 on the season, having won 12 of its previous 13 games. 
  • The Vikings took an early lead in the first set, leading 14-9. The Prairie Wolves trailed by three points late in the set, 20-17, but the Vikings went on a 5-3 rally to win 25-20. Addie Thomas of Nebraska Wesleyan topped the set with five kills.
  • Set two began exactly where set one left off, with the Vikings in complete command. Augustana went up 13-6.  The Vikings easily won the set, 25-13. Riedl led all Prairie Wolf hitters in the set with four kills, while Ramirez added three more.
  • Looking to avoid a sweep, Nebraska Wesleyan took a 2-1 lead in the third set thanks to a Ramirez kill. The Prairie Wolve used a 9-4 run to increase their advantage to 16-8. The Prairie Wolves took the first set 25-17.
  • Set four was an intense battle. The two teams traded points and leads throughout the set. The set needed extra points, but the Prairie Wolves would prevail, 26-24. The match would go to a decisive fifth set.
  • In a match full of ties and lead changes, the fifth was much of the same. The Prairie Wolves opened up with a 5-3 lead, but the Vikings would use a 4-0 run to take the lead. Nebraska Wesleyan went on a run of their own to win the set and the match, 15-12.

  • The Prairie Wolves return home on Thursday to face the winner of Coe and Loras in the A-R-C tournament Semifinals. The game will be streamed online, and live stats may be seen on the Nebraska Wesleyan Athletics website.
