Volleyball Extends Streak to 21 Straight Sets With Sweep Over Wartburg

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Nebraska Wesleyan University extended their streak to 21 straight sets with a sweep over Wartburg College on Saturday afternoon. The Prairie Wolves defeated the Knights for the first time since 2011 and swept them for the first time since 2008.
  • Coach Cain couldn't have asked for a better start from her starters in set one. NWU went up 4-0 and shut down all offense for the Knights. Behind kills from Molly RamirezElecea Saathoff, and Nyah Chambers, the Black and Gold extended their lead to 13-3. Wartburg attempted a late push, but too many offensive errors ended things early. The Prairie Wolves gained early momentum with a 25-15 set-one win.
  • Set two was no different for Nebraska Wesleyan. Molly Ramirez and Addie Thomas combined for 12 of NWU's 25 points while committing just one error. As a team, the Black and Gold hit a match-best of .286% in the second set, 25-21.
  • The Knights didn't leave Lincoln, Neb., without a fight. In the third set, Wartburg seemed to finally find rhythm offensively and went on an 11-3 run. Addie Thomas brought the Prairie Wolves back into striking distance with back-to-back kills, 8-12. Nebraska Wesleyan would then tie things up at 20 with Thomas' 13th kill of the day. The junior's kill came in the middle of a 7-1 run, where it finally ended with Cain's squad in the lead, 21-20.
  • A pair of NWU kills and Wartburg errors completed the comeback and solidified the sweep, 25-22.
  • Midway through the second set of Saturday's action, junior Addie Thomas recorded her 1000th career kill as a Prairie Wolf.
  • With a win over Wartburg College, Nebraska Wesleyan moves to 17-6 overall and remains undefeated in conference play (6-0).
