(May 14, 2022) - The Nebraska Wesleyan softball team fell, 2-0 in 14 innings, to Wartburg College then was defeated by the College of Saint Benedict, 8-0 in six innings, at NCAA Regional in St. Joseph, Minnesota. With the two losses, NWU's historic run to its first-ever NCAA Tournament came to a close.
Game One Recap
A pitching duel highlighted the longest game in program history. NWU's Kailey Meyer and WC's Ashley Nelson gave up just two combined hits through seven full innings. For Meyer, it was the second consecutive game she only game up one hit in a seven inning frame. Both pitchers did not allow a run until the Knight hit a two-run home run in the 14th inning.Â
Nebraska Wesleyan put pressure on Wartburg in back-to-back innings. In the ninth inning, the Prairie Wolves had runners on first and third with two outs but could not push the running run across. An inning later, NWU loaded the bases with just one out but again the Knights found a way to escape the jam. Additionally, the leadoff batter got on base in both innings.Â
Kailey Meyer recorded a pivotal strikeout in the top of the 12th inning. The Knights put the go-ahead run on third base with two bases. After falling behind in the count, 3-0, Meyer battled back to earn a strikeout, her sixth of the game.
Addison Duranski set-up the Prairie Wolves in the bottom of the 12th inning. Duranski roped a stand-up double right-field then Hanna Roth drew a walk before moving into scoring position. But Wartburg again found a way to get out of the jam.Â
