ST. JOSEPH, Minn. (May 13, 2022) - The Nebraska Wesleyan softball team knocked off the top-seed, College of Saint Benedict 4- 0, in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Softball Tournament. NWU's
Kailey Meyer tossed a one-hitter in the victory with the no-hit bid broken up with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. It is the first NCAA tournament win in program history and marked the 23rd win of the season, the most since 2011.
Meyer's gem in the pitching circle shut down the Bennies and the Prairie Wolves' offense did its damage in the fourth inning. In the fourth inning, Meyer provided the needed run support with an RBI double to left field, which scored
Val Gerlach and
Paige Davison. However,
Emma Alfieri provided the needed pop for the Prairie Wolves. Alfieri cranked a two-run home run to left field to push NWU to a 4-0 lead.
The dominant one-hit pitching performance from Meyer is the first of her decorated career. Last year, Meyer teamed with
Elise Warneke for a combined one-hitter against Luther on April 17. Meyer struck out six batters and only issued one walk in the shutout and helped her tie a program record for wins in a season with 18. Nebraska Wesleyan scored their four runs on five hits.
Hanna Roth went 2-for-4 at the plate and was the only Prairie Wolf with multiple hits.
