Late Surge Lifts Softball To Day One Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
LEESBURG, Fla. (March 6, 2022) - The Nebraska Wesleyan softball team swept its opening day of games on its Spring Break road trip in Leesburg, Florida. NWU shut out Penn State Behrend, 8-0, in game one to win by run-rule then scored four runs with two outs in the top of the seventh inning to comeback and defeat Ohio Northern, 4-2.

Game One Recap
Playing its first game since February 20, NWU was locked into a pitcher's duel before turning up its offense later in the game. Kailey Meyer pitched a gem of a game, tossing a complete-game two-hit shutout to earn her third win of the season. In the victory, Meyer struck out six batters and did not walk a batter.

The Prairie Wolves provided plenty of run support to Meyer in the fourth and sixth innings. In the fourth, NWU scored three runs starting on a double from Val Gerlach to plate the first run. Back-to-back singles from Bre Schneidewind and Sydney Nickerson scored runs two and three.

In the sixth inning, NWU used five runs to apply the run-rule. Meyer started the rally with a fielder's choice bunt that scored Emma Alfieri then a passed ball allowed Gerlach to score. Another fielder's choice plated Becca Chloupek before Hanna Roth scored Taylor Styskal on a fly ball to left field. Schneidewind then turned an error into the final Prairie Wolf run and apply the run-rule at 8-0.

Game Two Recap
Another pitching battle with a late offensive surge highlighted game two. Ohio Northern scored a run in the fifth inning then added one more run in the sixth inning.

Nebraska Wesleyan was down to its last out in the top of the seventh inning when Addie Duranski ignited the surge with a double to right field. The Polar Bears put the next two batters on base before Emma Alfieri drew a bases-loaded hit by a pitch to score Duranski and tie the game. In the next at-bat, Val Gerlach drilled a three-run double to left field to make it a 4-2 lead. NWU then held ONU scoreless to complete the win.

Jackie Morrissey pitched another tough game for the Prairie Wolves. Morrissey tossed a complete game and struck out nine batters giving up just two earned runs.
